All students at Risen Christ Lutheran School "parSuessipated" in a week-long birthday celebration of author/illustrator, Dr. Seuss, during the first week of March. Students were challenged to set a reading goal, read a set number of books or minutes per night in order to collect book-reading tags, and to join in the race to win first prize for their grade level. By the end of the week, hundreds of book-reading tags decorated the halls.
Throughout the week Dr. Seuss fun pages, hats, pencils, and books appeared in the classrooms. The Cat in the Hat would have had a difficult time choosing a new hat from the 35 new hat designs that were proudly created and displayed by the students. Lauren Yeary's designer hat was chosen as the best new design for 2011.
The week's festivities culminated with a Whoville potluck where green eggs and ham were served along with many other tantalizing dishes. The awards presentation ceremony was eagerly anticipated and smiles and giggles filled the room, along with a sense of accomplishment, from the smallest to the largest Risen Christ "Who" as they waited patiently to hear the names of the winners.
First place winners for reading the most books or minutes received a Dr. Seuss book and stuffed animal. They were Colin Linderman - Kindergarten, Natalie Boehmer, Ava Carter, and Taryn Phillips - first grade, Caleb Woodland - second grade, and Tyler Ackley - third through sixth grade. Those who chose either a book or stuffed animal for second prize included Sydney Pepin - Kindergarten, Sparky Chaney - first grade, Riley Steen - second grade, and Aaron Schack - third through sixth grade. Megan Allison, first grade, won a book and a snack for the “just participating” drawing. Michael Mowad, second grade, was the artist with the most creative drawing of The Cat in the Hat.
Miami Valley Flute Circle
Risen Christ Lutheran School recently hosted a musical performance by the Miami Valley Flute Circle. The group was dressed in Native American attire and shared with the children the history of Native Americans and their musical instruments.
The students got an opportunity to accompany the group by playing rattles, drums and various other instruments. All the children enjoyed listening, playing and learning more about the Native Americans and participating in the event.
The Miami Valley Flute Circle sponsors the SunWatch Flute and Art Gathering in August at the Sunwatch Village and Archaeological Park in Dayton, Ohio.
